Indian Activity Executive Committee (IAEC)

The Tampines Central IAEC was formed at the CC in 1999 to encourage Indian participation in community and national affairs by organizing cultural, educational, social, sports and recreational activities. It promotes Indian culture to non-Indians and also multi-racial participation in IAEC's activities.

A live cow was the centre of attraction of the Tampines West Community Centre on 18th January 2004. How honoured it was, as it was fed ponggal rice by MPs Sin Boon Ann and Yatiman Yusof.

It is an annual festival for the Indians, called Ponggal Festival, which is a time for Indians to rejoice and celebrate as they mark the beginning of the harvesting period.

To add some multi-racial flavouring, female participants from different ethnic groups cooked 5 pots of the ponggal rice, a sweet glutinous rice dish. Our two Guests-of-Honour,
MP Sin Boon Ann and MP Yatiman Yusof also lent a helping hand to prepare the dish.

This festival has taken a different meaning in a non-agrarian society like Singapore's: what the residents harvested was the deeper understanding they now have of their Indian neighbours.
