It is an annual festival for the Indians, called Ponggal Festival, which is a time for Indians to rejoice and celebrate as they mark the beginning of the harvesting period.
To add some multi-racial flavouring, female participants from different ethnic groups cooked 5 pots of the ponggal rice, a sweet glutinous rice dish. Our two Guests-of-Honour,
MP Sin Boon Ann and MP Yatiman Yusof also lent a helping hand to prepare
the dish.
This festival has taken a different meaning in a non-agrarian society
like Singapore's: what the residents harvested was the deeper understanding
they now have of their Indian neighbours.
